Getting started
What is Capseta?
Capseta is a private cooking system for home cooks. Save recipes from anywhere: websites, cookbooks, photos, handwritten cards, and PDFs. Then organize them, plan meals, build shopping lists, and cook, all in one place.
What does it cost?
Capseta is free during the public beta. After the beta, it’s a yearly subscription for your whole household, up to four people, and beta testers get a generous discount when we launch. Every recipe you add during the beta stays free to view, search, cook from, export, and share, even if you don’t subscribe. Adding new recipes after the beta will need a subscription.
Is Capseta just a recipe manager?
No. Recipe managers help you store recipes. Capseta connects those recipes to meal planning, shopping lists, and cooking, so you actually use them.
Who is Capseta for?
Home cooks who already have recipes they trust and need a better way to use them. If your recipes are scattered across bookmarks, cookbooks, screenshots, and emails, and you want one place to keep, find, plan around, and cook from them, Capseta is built for you.
The beta
What does it mean that Capseta is in beta?
Beta means Capseta is still being built in the open. The core features work and your data is real, so you can use it as your everyday recipe system today. You may run into rough edges, missing features, or the occasional bug while we polish things. The public beta is open to everyone, and what you tell us shapes what we fix and build next.
What happens to my recipes if I don’t subscribe when the paid product launches?
Recipes you add during the beta stay yours, even without a subscription. You can still view, search, cook from, export, and share them, just as you do today. After the beta, adding new recipes needs a subscription.
How do I report bugs or share feedback?
In the app, open Help and feedback from the Account menu or the footer. Report a problem, suggest an idea, or tell us anything else; we read every one. If you’d rather email, write to Hello@Capseta.app.
Adding recipes
Can I import recipes from any website?
From most of them. Paste a link and Capseta brings in the title, ingredients, steps, and timing in a clean format. A few sites block automated access; for those, copy and paste the recipe text instead.
What other ways can I add recipes?
Photograph cookbook pages or handwritten cards; Capseta reads handwriting too. Upload photos, PDFs, Word documents, or spreadsheets, or paste text from an email or message. On a computer, scan the code on the import screen to use your phone as the camera. It works with recipes in many languages.
Does AI processing mean my recipes are shared with a third party?
When you import a recipe, what you’re importing (the photo, the web page, or the text) goes to our AI partners so it can be read. When you add or edit a recipe, its ingredient lines go to AI too, so we can read the amounts. Either way, it’s sent without your name or account details. It isn’t used to train AI models, and it’s deleted within 30 days, unless it’s flagged for a safety review. Your meal plans, notes, and cook log are never sent to AI. Every import waits for you to check it. The details are in our Privacy Policy.
How accurate is the AI extraction?
It works well with clearly structured recipes from websites, typed text, and legible handwriting. Check each import when it arrives; most fixes take a few seconds, and everything is editable.
Can I edit recipes after importing?
Yes. Every recipe is fully editable: the title, ingredients, steps, timing, servings, tags, and photos. Add notes and your own changes. When you save, your changes sync to all your devices.
Privacy and sharing
Is my data private?
Yes. Your recipes are private by default: not published, not indexed by search engines, and not visible to anyone you haven’t shared them with. We don’t sell your recipes, we don’t build advertising profiles, and we block AI scrapers from your collection.
How does Capseta handle recipe copyright?
We respect copyright. Capseta is a personal recipe box, not a publishing platform. Save recipes for your own use and share them only with the people you choose: your household, a private group, or someone you send a link to. A link opens only an invitation; to cook from the recipe, they save it to their own Capseta. There’s no public feed and no bulk sharing.
Using Capseta
What devices and browsers work with Capseta?
Any modern device with a web browser: phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Chrome, Safari, and Edge are supported. Your recipes sync across all your devices.
Do you have a mobile app?
iOS and Android apps are in development. Until then, Capseta runs in the browser and can be added to your home screen. Add it from Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, and it works offline and syncs across your devices, with no app store needed.
Can I use Capseta offline?
Yes. Once it’s installed, Capseta keeps your recipes, meal plans, and shopping lists on your device, so you can cook from any recipe without an internet connection. Changes sync when you’re back online, which helps when the grocery store has no signal.
What languages does Capseta support?
Capseta itself is available in ten languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, and Catalan, and we’re adding more. Your recipes don’t have to match: you can save and cook from recipes in other languages too, and each one stays in the language it was written in.
Is Capseta accessible?
Yes. We design and build to meet WCAG 2.2 AA, and we treat that as a floor, not a ceiling: keyboard navigation, screen reader support, large readable text, and high-contrast colors, made for real kitchens rather than ideal desks.
Nutrition
Are the nutrition figures accurate?
They’re estimates, worked out from your ingredient list, and the food you make will differ with your products, amounts, and cooking. That’s true of any nutrition figure, even a packaged-food label: US rules allow calories, sugars, fat, and sodium to run up to 20% over what the label says. Capseta shows how each figure was made, how much of the dish it could count, and a range where it had to estimate a weight, so you can judge how far to rely on it.
Where do the numbers come from?
USDA FoodData Central and, where USDA has no data, product labels. Every ingredient shows the record it was matched to.
Can I change the figures?
Yes. You can correct any match, choose which ingredient you used when a recipe offers a choice, tell us your salt and how much you add at the end, say how much coating sticks, and change the servings to match your portion. Edit the recipe, and the figures follow.
If I correct a match, does it change anyone else’s recipes?
No. Your answers and corrections change only your own figures. If you report a problem and we find we had it wrong, that fix reaches everyone.
Does Capseta check for allergens?
No. Capseta matches ingredients to nutrition records, and a match says nothing about what’s in the product you bought or what it was made alongside. If you or someone you cook for has an allergy or intolerance, read every label, every time, and ask a qualified professional.
Does Capseta tell me what I should eat?
No. It doesn’t score recipes, call foods good or bad, or set targets. It shows what’s in your recipes, so you can compare them with the goals you’ve set with your doctor or dietitian.
Why is there no % Daily Value?
Daily Values are set for a general adult eating 2,000 calories. If you’re adapting recipes for a diet, your own limits are often different, and sometimes lower. Capseta shows the amounts so you can compare them with the targets you’ve been given.
Why doesn’t Capseta show added sugars?
Added sugar is chemically the same as the sugar already in fruit or milk, so no lab test can tell them apart in a finished food. US labels rely on the maker’s records instead. Our food data gives total sugars, but not the records behind added sugars, so we show total sugars rather than guess.
What does “Estimated match” mean?
Our software matched that ingredient to a food, and no one at Capseta has checked it yet. It doesn’t mean the match is wrong. Tap the pencil to set it right.
How is “salt to taste” counted?
As 0.3% of the dish’s weight, or a quarter teaspoon for the whole recipe if we can’t weigh it. You can tell us how much you add at the end, or give an amount in the recipe, and we use yours.
How is a teaspoon of salt weighed?
It depends on the salt. A teaspoon of Diamond Crystal kosher salt weighs about 2.8 g, and a teaspoon of table salt about 6 g. Plain “salt” and “kosher salt” are weighed as Diamond Crystal, and you can choose a different kosher salt once for all your recipes.
Why might potassium or phosphorus read low?
Many processed foods have phosphorus or potassium added, and makers often don’t report how much. Food databases miss what isn’t reported, so for processed ingredients these figures can run low. If you follow a kidney diet, check product labels and ask your dietitian.
Does scanning a barcode send a photo?
No. The camera picture stays on your device. Only the barcode number is sent.
Does Capseta track what I eat?
No. Nutrition is worked out per recipe and per serving. There are no daily totals and no food diary.
Does Capseta pick recipes for me?
No. It starts from your own recipes. When you ask it what to cook tonight, it suggests only from your own library.
Can I use this on a kidney, diabetes, or heart-health diet?
Many people use the figures to see what’s in a recipe and what to change. They’re estimates, not medical advice. Discuss them with your doctor or dietitian, and check product labels.
Planning and shopping
How does meal planning work?
Open the meal planner and see your whole week. Put recipes on the days you’ll cook them, and move them when plans change. Then add the week to a shopping list in one step.
How do shopping lists work?
Build a list from your meal plan, add a recipe’s ingredients, or add items yourself. Matching ingredients are combined and grouped by store category. Check things off as you shop. Lists work offline and sync across your devices.
Your account
How does sign-in work?
Making an account takes only a name and an email address; there’s no password to create. Sign in with a link we email you, or set up a passkey and sign in with Face ID, Touch ID, or Windows Hello. Passkeys can’t be phished or stolen.
Can I export my recipes?
Yes. Export your whole collection at any time. Your recipes aren’t locked in; they’re yours to take with you.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings and choose Delete account. Your recipes, meal plans, shopping lists, and personal data are permanently deleted. This can’t be undone, so export anything you want to keep first.
