Privacy and ownership
Your recipes belong to you.
Your recipes, meal plans, shopping lists, and notes are yours. We don’t sell them, we don’t share them, and we don’t use them to sell you anything.
Private by default
-
Private unless you share
Nobody sees your collection unless you invite them into your household or a private group. A link you share opens an invitation; the recipient must save it to their own Capseta account to view the whole recipe.
-
Closed to bots
Search engines and AI scrapers are blocked. Your recipes never show up in search results or in someone’s training data.
-
No tracking cookies
We count visits with Plausible, which doesn’t use cookies or follow you from site to site.
-
Never sold
We don’t sell your recipes or account details to data brokers or advertisers.
How we use AI
AI is what lets Capseta read a handwritten card or pull a recipe out of a cluttered web page. Here’s exactly what it sees.
What goes to AI partners for processing
- What you’re importing: the photo, the web page, or the text you pasted.
- When you add or edit a recipe: its ingredient lines, so we can read the amounts.
- It’s sent without your name or account details.
- Our agreements say it can’t be used to train AI models, and it’s deleted within 30 days, unless it’s flagged for a safety review.
What never does
- Your name, email, and account details.
- Your meal plans and shopping lists.
- Your notes, family stories, and cook log.
You always have the last word. AI can make mistakes, so every import waits for you to check and fix it, and every recipe stays editable.
Nutrition figures
Reading your ingredients works the same way as importing a recipe. When you add, import, or edit a recipe, its ingredient lines are sent to our AI partners, named in our Privacy Policy, to be read into amounts and foods. They go without your name or account, aren’t used to train AI models, and are deleted within 30 days, unless flagged for a safety review.
For performance reasons, we may keep a shared copy of how a general line like “2 cups flour” reads, with nothing linking it to you or your recipe. New food names join a shared food list that we use to improve the matching process for all users, and the AI helps match them to USDA records. Our team checks matches it isn’t sure of and may see a few example lines and recipe titles, never whose they are.
The figures are estimates, worked out on our own server from a copy of USDA’s data. If you search for a branded product, our server sends your search words to USDA.
Your answers and corrections change only your own figures. We never sell this information, and if you decide to delete your account, we will delete your answers, corrections, and reports.
Scanning a barcode
The picture you take of a barcode never leaves your device. The barcode reader runs right in the page and converts the stripes into a number. Capseta then looks it up in two public food databases, USDA’s and Open Food Facts, without your name, account, or internet address attached.
Nothing is saved unless you choose to use the product for an ingredient. Then its figures are saved to your account as your answer for that ingredient, used only in your recipes, and we note which product was used, with no link to you. You can undo that answer, and it’s deleted with your account.
If your browser has no barcode reader of its own, ours comes from Capseta’s own server, not an outside service. The camera turns off when you close the scanner.
Scanning with your phone for your computer works the same way: the phone sends only the number, through Capseta, to the window you have open, and the link expires after 10 minutes.
