Import a recipe from a file

Upload recipe files saved on your computer. Capseta’s AI reads the document and extracts ingredients, instructions, and cooking details.

Ready to import a recipe file?

Upload PDF, Word, or text files and let our AI extract the recipe. Handles digital documents, typed recipes, and exported files from other apps.

Open the file importer

Have recipe text? Try the paste text tool. For cookbook photos, use the photo import tool.

How it works

  1. Upload your file.

Drag and drop a PDF, Word document, or text file, or click to browse your computer.

  2. AI reads the document.

Capseta’s AI extracts text from the file and identifies the recipe structure.

  3. Save to your cookbook.

Review the extracted recipe, make any edits, and save it to your personal collection.

Why import recipes from files?

  • Supports PDF, DOCX, and TXT files, the most common document formats.
  • Works with digital and text-based PDFs, extracting text directly from document content.
  • Handles recipe collections and multi-page documents, finding up to ten recipes per file.
  • Preserves formatting and measurements: ingredient quantities and units are kept intact.
  • Maximum 10MB file size, large enough for most recipe documents.

Frequently asked questions

What file formats are supported?

PDF, DOCX (Word), and TXT (plain text). Older .doc files aren’t supported; save them as .docx first. Maximum file size is 10 MB.

Does it work with scanned PDF recipes?

Text-based PDFs work best. Scanned PDFs (images of text) have limited support. For scanned recipe pages, use the photo import tool for better results.

Can I import a whole cookbook PDF?

Each upload finds up to ten recipes and tells you if there were more. For a whole cookbook, import it in parts.

What about recipe files from other apps?

If your other app exports to PDF or TXT, you can import those files here. For a CSV or spreadsheet with many recipes, use the spreadsheet import in the app after you sign in.

Is file import free?

Yes, during the public beta.

What if the PDF has images but no text?

Image-only PDFs (scans without OCR) won’t extract well with the file tool. Use the photo import tool instead, which uses AI vision to read text from images.
